On this site you will learn everything about Nintendo's Virtual Reality experiment, the Virtual Boy. Released back in 1995 only in Japan and North America, the system failed all along the line and disappeared from the market less than a year later, quietly and without any official word. Only 22 games were released for the Virtual Boy during its short lifespan.
Here we want to build a memorial for this unique oddity of videogame history. Dedicated to its brilliant creator, Gunpei Yokoi. 'Pro Motion NG' ('Pro Motion Next Generation') is a feature-rich pixel art drawing software and a 2d tile map editing tool. Recently, it has seen a new release that adds an awesome new feature - stereo drawing! Thanks to contributions by and, you will now be able to easily create amazing stereoscopic sprites and animations and live preview your work using either anaglyph or polarized glasses. To do so, you are provided with a stereo drawing canvas that shows left and right eye images side by side, and several drawing tool modes:. Copy: Everything you draw on one image, is automatically also copied to the other image, but at a displacement offset which you can change on-the-fly.
Smart Copy: An extended 'Copy' mode that lets you, for example, draw a line in 3D space, i.e. With different displacements for both ends. Clone: This mode lets you copy existing pixels of the left image displaced to the right image. Perfect for converting existing 2D images to 3D. You can get Pro Motion, there's a commercial version, an evalution version as well as a feature limited free edition. After almost 4 years and a few preview releases, VBDE has finally reached version 1.0.0! VBDE is an all-in-one portable Virtual Boy development environment for Windows.
Only download, unzip and start working! No installation, no hassle. It comes in the form of a lightweight editor (Notepad) with buttons for compiling with gccVB 4.4.2 (running inside Cygwin), running on an emulator, flashing to a FlashBoy or on-the-fly image conversion using grit. It contains a lot of example code which can be used as a starting base for new projects.
Thanks to the loose coupling of the individual components, you can of course also use VBDE with your favorite IDE, such as Eclipse or IDEA (my personal favorite). Also included and fully integrated in the package is the brand-new version 4.0 beta 1 of jorgeche's VBJaEngine! The engine saw an extensive overhaul and after 10 years in the making (development started in November 2005 as 'VB Game Development Kit'), we now have a very mature and powerful engine at hand that is much more accessible and comfortable to use than ever before. And have released their translation patch for Virtual Fishing! This patch translates all the Japanese text in the game, finally making all of the Japan exclusive Virtual Boy games playable in English. Still missing are the title screen logo, the stage selection screen header (both images) and the player names on the all times records screen, which will be done in a future patch revision. With about half a year in the works, this is by far the most complicated Virtual Boy translation patch to date.
If you're interested in its backstory, you can find sort of a development log in. Download and discussion.
Virtual Pro Wrestling 64 is a professional wrestling video game released in 1997 on the Nintendo 64 game console and the second game in the Virtual Pro Wrestling series. The game was only released in Japan and uses a slightly remodeled version of WCW vs. NWo: World Tour's engine. The game features wrestlers from WCW, but also includes generic renditions of wrestlers from major Japanese promotions such as New Japan Pro Wrestling and All Japan Pro Wrestling a feature that would continue following the release of the sequel Virtual Pro Wrestling 2. The game is a semi-sequel to Virtual Pro-Wrestling released that same year exclusively for the PlayStation. VPW 64 was succeeded by Virtual Pro Wrestling 2: Odo Keisho, which was released on the Nintendo 64 in 2000.
